Air conditioning systems are all made to cool the air in a business or house, but there are several different kinds of air conditioning systems, including these common types:
Split A/C Systems are Most Common
A split air conditioning system is one that has an evaporator coil that removes the heat and moisture out of the air and is located inside a cabinet type container inside the house. There is also a condenser coil in a metal container located outside the house that releases the heat from the house, as well as a compressor used to pump the refrigerant between the A/C coils. This type can use the home’s ductwork for both heating and cooling, thus saving money on installation.
Heat Pump A/C Units
Heat pump A/C systems pump the heat from a house in summer, but in winter they do the opposite and bring heat inside and use it to warm the house. They are most efficient in mild climate areas. They don’t work well if the temperature gets below freezing, so aren’t used in cold regions. They also use the home’s ductwork system.
Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners
Mini-split systems are useful in homes without ductwork. These units get placed high up on the walls and have attached blowers. Tubing links the indoor air handling unit and the outdoor compressor and condenser units and circulates refrigerant between the two. However, each room has its own air handler, so it can be cooled or not cooled separately. They do cost more at first, but may save energy costs later.
Room Air Conditioners
Room air conditioners mount into windows and work the same way as most with the compressor stuck outside. They only cool one room, therefore, they are not able to cool a whole house, but are cheaper than central systems.
Direct Evaporative Coolers
Evaporative coolers pull fresh outside air through moist pads and cool it via evaporation and circulate it through a house. They are cheaper than other systems and add moisture to a house, an advantage in very dry climates.
